At Tambia, we believe choosing great coffee should be simple. Whether you’re new to speciality beans or looking to refine your palate, here’s how to choose the right one for you:
1. Start with Single-Origin
Single-origin coffee comes from one specific place—sometimes even a single farm or lot. This means the coffee reflects its terroir: the altitude, soil, microclimate, and care behind it.
💡 Look for: A clearly stated origin. At Tambia, all our beans come from our own farm, Hacienda La Sierra, in the Colombian Andes.
2. Check the Details
Speciality coffee should tell you what’s inside the bag:
- Varietal (e.g. Castillo, Geisha, Pink Bourbon)
- Processing method (washed, natural, honey)
- Altitude and farm location
- Tasting notes (e.g. toffee, red fruits, citrus)
- Roast level (light, medium, dark)
💡 If the label is vague, chances are the coffee is too.
3. Pick a Roast Style That Suits You
- Light roast: Bright, acidic, and perfect for complex, fruity profiles like Geisha.
- Medium roast: Balanced and approachable. Great for everyday drinking.
- Dark roast: Bold, smooth, and chocolatey—great for espresso or milk-based drinks.
💡 Tambia tip: Our Castillo comes in all three roast levels so you can find the flavour that fits your taste. Maybe try them all so you can compare and decide?
4. Understand the Processing Method
How a coffee cherry is processed after harvest affects its flavour:
- Washed: Clean, crisp, and vibrant
- Natural: Fruity and heavier-bodied
- Honey: Somewhere in between, with a round, sweet character
💡 At Tambia, all our coffees currently are washed, allowing their origin character to shine through clearly.
5. Think About How You Brew
Your brewing method can shape your experience:
- Pour-over or Chemex: Try light to medium roasts for clarity and nuance
- French press or espresso: Go medium to dark for body and richness
- AeroPress or Moka pot: Medium is a versatile all-rounder
💡 Choose coffee that suits your gear—not just your taste.
Bonus Tip: Go Beyond the Cup
Speciality coffee is about more than flavour. It’s about ethics, sustainability, and connection to origin.
At Tambia, we grow, process, and roast every bean ourselves. That means full traceability, fair wages, and deep care for our people and land. When you choose us, you’re choosing a coffee with a story.
